So what is the difference? Well….Think of it like a car. The outside is the look and feel of a website whereas the mechanics like the engine and gearbox is the development aspect of a website. Unlike the aesthetics of a website, the development is all about getting things to work. It is sometimes difficult to find a web company that does both in tandem. At Brown Booth we have the capability of carrying out both services along side each other.
The benefit of having in-house development is that there is no need to outsource the development of a website and there is direct correlation with the web design and the development of a website.
It is important to note that a graphic designer is not necessarily a website designer and visa versa. Graphic designers can often compliment what we do. We do work with a number of local businesses, where customers have elected to get the look and feel of the website put together in a graphical way using an external company.
The mechanics of a website in terms of getting stuff to work is called web development. It is crucial to understand the difference between the design and the development of a website. Luckily, we do and have the capability of providing both services along side each other.
Finding a web company that offers both web design and web development along side each other is often difficult. There are some companies that will tell you that they do development and they often outsource this to either local agencies and or individuals. We are all in house!!
Web development is all about getting things to work. We always look at the best and most efficient way to develop a site’s functions. From simple web based forms to more technical data feeds in and out of internal or cloud based systems, we got you covered.
Along side the web design stage, the web development of a site is always carried out in a structured way. Beginning with the consultation with the client to discover what they actually want out of the website through to the actual putting together of the code. Below are the stages we follow:
Getting to know what a client wants can be sometimes difficult at the start. More often than not the customer has a brief idea of what they want to do. Our job is to get into the detail with our client’s requirements and really understand what it is they really want the particular development to do.
More often than not we will always start with a full backup of a website that we are building. This is to cover us in case of a complete website melt down during the development stage. If we are developing on a live website, we will always take a backup of the live site and create a second development site so that we can freely develop without affecting the live site. Once in to the development we test every step of the way and always ensure that we keep the customer in the loop of what we are doing and how we are doing it.
Pushing a development live during the build of a website is more easier than doing it after a website has been built and is live. If we do have to push a development live on a website that is already published, we will always start with a full backup of the website before rolling out the development feature/s. Always safe to be sure right?
We always welcome our customers to come and sit with us in our shop to discuss developments. However, we are equally comfortable speaking with our clients in a consultative way via a phone call or online meeting. Consulting with a client on development requirements is essential as not doing this will result in something not working the way the customer envisaged.
Building is a bit like putting a car engine together. Get the wrong component in the wrong place and you have a car that won’t start. Same with web development. If you get a piece of code wrong this can end up with the whole website not working. For this reason we always ensure that we back everything up during the build process. Testing is always first!!
Before releasing a development into the wild, we always ensure that all components are tested thoroughly. In most cases we will also get the client to test the development to ensure that it meets with their needs and expectations. As we keep mentioning, and it is important, a backup of the existing website is taken before we release any development to any website, especially if it is already live.
Sometimes a simple contact form is not enough to do the job. We have developed some very intricate forms to date which include things like training course bookings all the way through to a fully interactive business plan creator.
There are a number of Estate Agent software platforms available on the cloud. We have worked with a number of these to get datafeeds working into a website producing the front end look and feel of properties available.
Working with companies such as Storefeeder we can develop stock feeds and more complex feeds depending on requirements. Data analysis and the compiling of data is something that we also do during this kind of development process.
Channels such as Google Shopping and Facebook Marketplace are becoming very popular. Although there are applications on the web that can deal with multi-channel feeds, we can do this within a client’s website at a fraction of the cost.
For any interactive website, web forms are essential components. From a simple contact form through to more complex and interactive forms we can do the lot. Starting with a flat layout we ensure that we have all elements mapped out before we start development of any web based form.
Integrating with any internal or cloud based system can be a daunting prospect for many. Rest assured that we have years of technical experience within this area with extensive knowledge in the latest offerings and technology that goes with anything feed related.
Developing an e-commerce website doesn’t just mean that we stop at the website. Helping out with data analysis and import/export is an essential part of any shopping feed integration into a website. Testing is also a very important part of this process.
Sometimes a simple call to discuss your requirements is all it takes. Quite often our customers feel relieved once they have reached out. A particular development may seem impossible to do and also may feel very out of reach.
There is always more than one way to do something and we have a real outside of the box approach when it comes to web development requirements.
