Where to start? Well first things first lets talk about software. There are many logo creation software packages out there but we recommend Canva which is a free online design tool. Using this software you can quite quickly design your own logo using pre-installed templates for free.
Once you have created your Canva account login in and click on Templates in the left menu. This will show you all of the available templates that you can use to design pretty much anything. Great tool for social media posts by the way.
Go ahead and search for Logo in the top search section ‘Search thousands of templates’. You will be presented with many logo templates that you can use to design your own with. There are lots of categories to choose from as well. As you will see, this is why we said in our main insider knowledge post that logo design is quite often the most difficult step, there are lots and lots of options.
Once you have decided on your logo template click on it and click the option ‘Customise this template’. By simply double clicking on an element you will be able to edit it. In our example we have created a number of fairly simple logos in black with a white background and white with a black background.
Having a ‘play’ with all of the options within your logo design can be fun and will result eventually in you creating that perfect logo.
Here is an example of how our logo started to look after playing with colours etc. As you can see, we went for a plain black on white to start with.
Once you have finished editing the logo, click on the ‘Share’ button top right of the browser window then click ‘Download’. This will present you with a recommended download file type, in most cases will be PNG if it is a static logo. Change the size of the logo, in terms of pixels, by default the system will recommend 500 x 500 px.
If you want a transparent logo select the ‘Transparent background’ option. This will allow you to overlay the logo onto any background colour. We would always recommend downloading a couple of solid logos so black on white and white on black in our case and then a couple of transparent ones again in black and white in our example.
After playing around with options and colours we decided here to go with a black background with a semi transparent middle section with white writing on our logo.
